Weather in Sri Lanka in December

Travelling to Sri Lanka for your Christmas holiday? Well, you’ve picked just the right time. Especially if you’re travelling to Sri Lanka with Kids. December marks the beginning of the tourist season along the South and West coast of the country. The weather in Sri Lanka in December is a lot better as compared to the harsh, unpredictable monsoons of October and November. The East coast receives heavy rainfall from the “Maha monsoon” winds. This also affects Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle. But if you’re looking to relax by the pristine beaches, the south coast of the island is the ideal region to visit.

The South and West Coast of Sri Lanka in December

The South and West coast of Sri Lanka experience great weather conditions. Plenty of sunlight, accessible waters especially for all those adventure enthusiasts and a great time to work on that holiday tan. The climate along the coast returns to normal with an average temperature of 30ºC ideal to bask in the sunshine by some of the best beaches in the country. Being tourist season, rates for accommodation are relatively high during this time. If you plan on travelling to Sri Lanka in December, be sure to make bookings in advance in order to avoid considerable price hikes.

The North and North-East coast of Sri Lanka in December

The Maha Monsoons hit the Northeast coast of the country between October to January and it receives heavy rainfall during this time of the year. The gorgeous beach towns of Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Passikudah see a drastic drop in tourism during this period. What’s a beach without clear skies and some sunshine? Besides this, several dining establishments remain closed during this period. The best of hotels can be booked at the lowest possible rates. But besides that, going outdoors and exploring the region, isn’t much of an option.

The Hill Country and Cultural Triangle in December

Since the monsoon has settled in the Hill Country region by December with the retreat of the Southwest monsoon winds, the entire area comes to life and is even more beautiful. The Adam’s peak pilgrimage season begins this month and runs until May, also known as the dry season. It is also a popular time to visit the Horton plains. The terrain is still wet and the weather is chilly but the landscapes are a sight worth witnessing.

The Cultural Triangle on the other hand, receives rainfall from the northeast monsoon winds. The weather in Sri Lanka in December is definitely not suitable to explore the ancient ruins and cultural sites of Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle.

The National Parks of Sri Lanka in December

The national parks in the south can be explored during this time. There is always a good chance of spotting leopards in Yala National Park. You can also visit the Udawalawe National park, for spotting some wonderful birds.

On the other hand, visiting the national parks along the northeast coast, like Kaudulla and Minneriya national park, is something we wouldn’t recommend. The terrain would be wet and also could get flooded.
