Nik likes relaxed travels, and visiting places off the beaten path. We planned a 17 day trip for him keeping these in mind, taking him through Cambodia and South Vietnam.
Cambodia’s stops were all interesting, as the modernity of Phnom Penh contrasted well with the small town of Battambang and chic Siem Reap. In South Vietnam he stayed in Ho Chi Minh City, venturing into the Mekong Delta from there, and finally catching some sun at the beach town of Mui Me to relax for some days. All along, Asia Someday ensured he had a hassle-free, memorable trip.

Once called the Pearl of Asia, Phnom Penh was marred by the impact left behind by war and revolution. Yet, like a phoenix, it has risen from the ashes to become the hip and happening capital of Cambodia. It is known for its impressive culture and architecture, religious significance, pre and post colonial history, royal heritage and its nightlife! And whenever you had enough of the city life, you can simply hop on a ferry across the Mekong to experience simpler country life and nature.
Cambodia's second largest city is a merge between eventful and relaxing- its sleepy exterior has a lot in store underneath. The creative atmosphere, the affordable boutique accommodation and great restaurants, surrounded by lush surroundings with distant temples is worth experiencing. There's plenty to do and see in and around Battambang. Visit the Killing Caves of Phnom Sampeau as well as the famous Bat Cave, take a ride on the fun 'bamboo' train or simply enjoy the less touristy life!
Siem Reap is famous as the gateway to the UNESCO heritage site of the Angkor Wat temple complex, one of the largest religious monuments in the world. Once you've run out of energy for the temples, take a look at the Chinese-inspired shop-houses and French architectural buildings around you; Siem Reap is an adventure waiting for you to look its way.
Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, is one of Vietnam's most energetic cities. It presents a seamless blend of past and present; a dynamic energy propels it forward, while remnants of its past lie among skyscrapers and shopping malls. It's also Vietnam's culinary capital, so make sure you sample the deliciousness of Vietnamese cuisine.
Considered to be the epicenter of the Mekong Delta, Can Tho is a lively city. An impressive waterfront bordered by gardens, and proximity to the Delta's biggest and most famous floating market means it sees a fair number of tourists, yet, manages to retain its beauty. Can Tho also makes for a great base to further venture into the Mekong Delta.
On the second visit to the metropole you can visit one of many rooftop bars to enjoy the amazing view of the skyline.
This beach resort town in South Vietnam is ideal for both beach bums and adventure lovers alike. Palm-lined beaches are perfect to relax, and steady winds ensure you get your fill of kitesurfing, sailing and other water sports. In the nearby white and red sanddunes one can try out sand boarding or quad biking. Cut off, yet within close distance of Ho Chi Minh City, Mui Ne is an ideal beach getaway in Vietnam.
Return to Saigon to catch your International flight home.
